We are moving!

Hello again

The removalists are here! I mentioned some time back in my other blog on careers and innovation that I was planning on moving my blogs to a single new blog at http://www.OwenMcNamara.com and to use WordPress instead of Blogger - see this article for the reasons why. Well that day has at last come. So from now on my blog posts will be on the new domain which you can get to by clicking here.

Why use my name as the URL? Well, many experts recommend that if you work a lot on the internet, which I do, that you should protect your own name by registering it as a domain (so if you haven't already done that I suggest you do - it costs very little per year and you don't need to do anything with it but at least it will be yours.). I tried to come up with a new interesting name for my blog, and couldn't. My previous blogs were about quite different topics and my new blog will also cover a range of topics that interest me so for now I will use my own name as the blog name. It is the best name I could think of at the moment.

My aim in the new blog is that my posts and newsletter are full of content, not ads, and so you will notice most of my articles in the new blog are longer than the average blog posts you have seen. Yes, there are some ads in my posts but only a few select ones. My aim is to keep them to a bare minimum.

Sometimes I write a blog post or article once a day, and sometimes none for a week or two. It depends on what other projects I have on. I develop and maintain my own commercial websites in a number of different market segments, and I work as a Consultant in Technology Project Management, Software Management and Internet Business Management and Marketing. For your information, my main consulting business website is http://www.KnowledgeStream.com.au which I will completely update sometime in the not too distant future but it gives you a guide.

In addition to my blog posts I do sometimes put together more comprehensive newsletters that people will enjoy and find useful. These will be in the form of a PDF newsletter that I place on my new blog site and then email you a link so you can download at your leisure. My new blog has a simple free newsletter subscription form where you can enter your email address and automatically be sent a short email with a link back to my blog whenever the site is updated or there is a newsletter. That saves everyone time.

I hope you find the new blog and newsletters interesting, informative and valuable to you. Don't hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions or suggestions at my new blog.

Until next time

Latest Alexa Rank and Time to Change Domain Names

Lately I have been working more and more on our e-commerce site which has left me less time to do some blogs, which is a pity because I enjoy blogging. I will get back to it soon with some more results and lessons from what I have been doing. As for that Alexa rank I mentioned in the last few posts - well it continues to grow as our traffic grows. Today it is under 485,000 and continuing to rise up the rankings. The e-commerce site (not this blog) now has around 2000 people per month visiting it and that is growing rapidly as well. It is going to be very interesting to see just how high the site goes before it settles down. I also continue to expand the site and its content and range of offers almost every day so it has a way to go yet.

On a completely different topic, the problem of propagation time for a new domain name cropped up for me this week, not a big problem, but definitely an annoyance. On Tuesday morning at 4:30am in fact, I finished off a small site for a friend of a friend in the UK. Yes, I am in Australia, and my host is in the US, and she is in the UK. Isn't it great to live in an internet enabled World? The site was fun to do and we ended up with a great result using a mix of text, and video for a particular sector of the health market. But what was interesting was the time it took for the new domain name to ripple throughout the internet DNS systems. I had read that it can sometimes take 2-3 days before a new domain name is active but previously it has only taken a day.

I registered the domain at my US Host company, and under a day later the domain worked for me. But the person who needed the site in London urgently couldn't see it until over a day after I could, over 2 days after registration. It was interesting how the domain name servers in my network had been updated a full day before hers. I am not sure why, but I have read enough to know it happens. In this case I could see the domain here in Australia, another person in Ireland could see it, but not on the particular network in London. Normally that wouldn't matter too much but this time we were in a hurray, with very short notice to get the site up and running. That is the way it goes. It is up, and running and everyone is happy but I am still curious about why it takes so long for the DNS systems to update.

If you are actually transferring an existing domain from one site, host, or address to another then there are ways that you can change the TCP TTL values a few days prior to the switch so that your actual domain name change takes as little time as possible. To read more on this consult the DNS article in Wikipedia. But you still have to make those changes a few days before.

Until next time

Alexa rank breakthrough

Just a quick update to my last post, today our e-commerce or ecommerce (which do you prefer?) shopping site that we operate as a part-time activity has just hit the top 1 Million in Alexa! We have done that on our own without the use of any SEO companies. In the future when we are more profitable I may well engage a specialist company to assist, and there are some good ones out there, but for now am content to work away at the Search Engine Optimization of our business sites myself.

I am very pleased with the results and have lots of plans for the site. Its Alexa rank is now 994,840 and climbing quite dramatically. But it is important not to get carried away with one ranking or another, as happy as I am about making it to the top One Million already what does it really mean?

What is even more important is how it ranks in terms of the keywords we are targetting - can it be found by our customers when they are looking to buy something? Is it linked to by many other sites? Do people buy from it or just browse and leave? How long do people stay on the site or do they just "bounce off"? Do customers come back? Does our site provide some real value to customers? Do the customers recognise that value? Can it be easily found in organic searches? Does it achieve our business goals such as making a profit? Does it generate leads for backend sales and profits? And much much more.

A much longer post is brewing on this topic but meanwhile here are a few great articles I came across recently on the topics of Search Engine Optimisation, Keyword rankings and similar topics. Hope you find them useful.

Until next time

Latest Alexa Rankings of our Sites

Many posts ago I mentioned the Alexa rankings of this blog
http://the-small-internet-business-blog.blogspot.com/2009/02/measuring-search-rank-of-this-blog.html

and the Top One 500 to One Million sites in the World.
http://the-small-internet-business-blog.blogspot.com/2009/02/top-500-sites-on-web.html

So what has happened to the search rankings of this blog, and several other sites we run since then?

Where were we?
Back in mid February this blog, my career blog: http://careerblog.owenmcnamara.com/ and our new and very rough at the time company website: http://www.knowledgestream.com.au/ were all unranked. That is if you went into Alexa (http://www.alexa.com/) there was insufficient data for any of our new sites and so they had no ranking.

Now where are we now?
Today this blog ranks at 3,400,745
(http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/the-small-internet-business-blog.blogspot.com)

The Career Blog ranks at 2,503,229
(http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/next-career-move.blogspot.com)

Our company website, definitely better than it was, ranks at 2,093,571 (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/www.knowledgestream.com.au)

My new, as yet empty, WordPress (or Joomla and Wordpress - still thinking on that) blog ranks at 3,220,059 (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/owenmcnamara.com)

And our new e-commerce web site, launched just one month ago already ranks at: 1,456, 787

How we did that, in such a short time, is a long story and I will put together a blog sometime. I wonder where all those sites and more will be in 3, 6, 9 months from now? I expect they will slowly grow and then plateau, but I am not sure what the level of that is as yet.

To put those numbers above in perspective go to the SiteInfo section of Alexa (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo) and try out a few company sites you know to see where they are. Some will be very high and some much lower than you expect.

What does it all mean?
Does the Alexa ranking of your site matter? What is the relationship, if any, with the organic search results for your site? Should you care?

Well, like most things, it depends. I will continue this very interesting topic in my next blog later in the week.

Until then, below is a presentation I came across that has some useful information.

Innovative Internet Video

Recently I came across another really innovative educational video that has nothing to do with internet business but everything to do with education, information exchange and presentation and just what can be done with imagination and the right tools.

The following extract explains the video: "Tomas Nilsson, a graphic design student from Linköping University, tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood with animated infographics. The video (below) was inspired by Röyksopp's Remind Me and has that ever so familiar European electronica music moving things along. Covering topics from grandma's nutritional value to the aerodynamics of the traveling bus, the video is very tongue in cheek and totally worth the three minutes of your life."

Have a look, you need sound on as well and just think what can be done with that sort of video. Then compare with the great Common Craft videos I mentioned in the previous blog. Both styles are interesting, innovative, imaginative and engaging. I hope you like this.

Email Marketing

Recently I have been reviewing email marketing tools, often called autoresponders for my own business. For those that don't know the term autoresponder is confusing to many: there are the simple autoresponders in your email system and email marketing autoresponders. Most email accounts will enable you to set up a simple autoresponder that for example replies to any received email when you are away on holidays, but no more than that.

For internet marketing and ecommerce much more sophisticated email marketing tools are needed and readily available - at a very reasonable price. These tools enable you to for example, set up entire sequences of emails to be sent out at set times to your email lists, to collect users email addresses in an opt-in form and to enable people to unsubscribe from your lists - all automatically! These tools will also comply with government standards for anti-spam. They also enable you to track your email newsletters to find out if users/customers/members are reading them or not.

In the next few posts I will discuss several of the main systems available and today I will start with one called Get Response.

Here is what you get with it:

- Personalization of emails
- Unlimited follow-ups
- Complete import and export features
- Send a broadcast email to your entire list all in one shot
- Attach files to any or all of your autoresponses
- Track your leads and responses
- Your choice of 19 different domains names to send from
- Send HTML-enhanced messages
- Your own "confirmation" screen
- Selective broadcasting
- Block unwanted email addresses
- Bounce-back management
- Full activity reports via email
- Free, unlimited technical support
- and more!

To see the full feature list with demos click here or on the icon below.

And for those in the affiliate marketing business you will be surprised that GetResponse allows you to purchase their products for yourself on your own affiliate link and still be rewarded for it! Most companies do not allow that at all. I believe GetResponse is being very smart with that approach and they have a great product. So check it out. I did, and bought it for my own business and am using it every day.

I will discuss some other well known email marketing tools in later posts.

Finding a Niche Market - Long Tail Marketing

Lately I have been spending a lot of time trying to find some new niches for our online business and if you have done that you will know that it isn't easy. I know some people who seem to have that skill naturally. You know those people that just seem to have a good hunch as to what is a good market niche to get into at any time. But it doesn't come to me that easily or to many people. So just what I have been doing to do that?

First I come up with some different ideas of product or service areas or hobbies or topics where there may be a need. Sometimes I get ideas from the news or magazines or topics of conversation. The key there is to always be looking and asking the question: "I wonder if there is a niche there?". Then I do some searches on the net in those areas to see what is available. I use the fantastic Google Keyword tools to help me understand just how many people and in which countries are looking for those products or services. The Google Keyword tool can be found at http://www.googlekeywordtool.com. I use these tools everyday and am continually amazed at what you can do with them.

Most often of course I find a market already full so I move onto the next one until I find one where there is a niche that is not too full, where people need something, and where I can add some value to those people. Then I set about supplying something for that niche market. This can take a lot of time and I find is quite an iterative process with a lot of trial and error. I have to browse around quite a lot at times. Often I start looking in one product or service area, and notice an adjacent market that I hadn't thought of where I can put together an offer that satisfies a niche. So I often start down one path but find others along the way that offer me some chance of success.

For instance I am currently marketing great products in areas that I certainly had no intention of marketing originally but I found them, loved them, found a niche and so promote them and feel I am adding value by presenting different markets with products they love but didn't already know about. Of course even if a market is full you can still be successful if your product or service offers something that others don't and if your marketing is better.

To really analyse what looks like a promising niche market I use additional tools to Google and I also have some spreadsheets and processes of my own. There are many commercially available tools out there, just do a search and you will find them. Personally I have found the "BrainStorm It" tool that comes with my Web host to be one of the very best in fact and I have written a previous post on that. To be honest I think just their analysis tools almost pay for the cost of the hosting.

Of the many other tools out there one of the most widely used is of course the legendary Wordtracker. Try Wordtracker for free.

Another source of niche markets are the magazines in bookshops or newsagents or news stands or online. Many people have found profitable niches in hobby areas by noticing that there were a lot of magazines selling on that topic, doing some research and finding a niche within that market. Others find niches by using tools such as Googles trends and insights tools at http://www.google.com/trends or the Google Hot Trends tool http://www.google.com/trends/hottrends and finally the Google Insights tool http://www.google.com/insights/search

Some talk of micro-niches, or long-tail marketing and I have mentioned long tail marketing before in a previous post. It is something that can work on the internet but is harder to make work in the offline world. But for some internet business owners such as myself understanding how to use the Long Tail of the market is crucial to success because we usually cannot compete with the large companies in the mass markets - they will simply outspend us on their campaigns. But not always! Click here to read more about Long Tail Marketing. There is an audio there as well.

Google AdWords

Google AdWords information can be found all over the net and of course one of the main places is Google itself at http://www.google.com/adwords and at the AdWords support site.

Today I came across a couple of useful additional items to help out.

The first is a video from the Chief Economist at Google and it explains AdWords in plain terms: Introduction to Google AdWords Auction. There are lots more at the Google YouTube Business Channel.

Google also has a blog dedicated to AdWords: Google AdWords Blog and lots of online help. There are of course many books on the topic that you can get as well. Amazon certainly has plenty on offer: Amazon Books. One book I am reading myself is entitled "Winning Results with Google Adwords" by Andrew Goodman.

And for those of you with a theoretical bent, maybe it is just me, here is a research paper from Standford analyzing the auction mechanisms behind AdWords: Standford Research Paper. This paper is only for those with a mathematical inclination and not for the faint of heart!

It pays to be careful with something like AdWords until you really know what you are doing and then it is a fantastically powerful marketing tool.

Web hosting for Business and Fun

As we grow our online business I have found that there are many great hosting companies to choose from, so many in fact that it is very confusing. Each offers a different set of features and it depends on which business you are in as to which would suit you.

In Australia we have set up just a small site at Crazy Domains. We have found them cheap and reliable for that site and they have a range of packages. Our ecommerce sites though are based in the US and Canada because that is where most of our business comes from and because we wanted a different package of tools with our site.

So after a long review I chose our main web host as SBI and I previously wrote just a few words about them in a blog a week or two back. Watch the video for more information: SBI Video Introduction

As great as they are they may not suit your particular type of business or hobby or interest. So here is a good review site that will help Hosting Review site. Their top 10 lists organised into categories can be found here: Hosting Directory Top 10 Lists. Another good review site is TopHosts.

And there are many many more web site reviews to choose from.

Depending on which site you choose you may find you still need to install other packages such as WordPress. Maybe you can do that yourself and there is certainly lots of information at their site at http://www.wordpress.org or you may want to get someone to help. Well I came across this useful site earlier today that seems to offer exactly that service for a small annual charge: http://www.simplescripts.com

Back to business, today we are publishing a survey and I will use some PPC to promote that to the correct market. More on that another time.

Stay positive

My chosen Internet Business Host

Those of you who know me, know that I can't just go and buy something like most people do. Oh, no! I have to study it, review all the available data, compare similar products, do an informal cost benefit analysis, look at the risks, the strengths and then and only then do I buy a product! This can be tiring, but that is the way I work. I can't just jump in and buy something, particularly something as important to our business as an Internet Web host.

I spent some weeks reviewing all the big players, and many other players. And I concluded that there were lots of good hosts out there who provided lots of tools to build a web site, but not many that helped you build an internet business, even fewer that seemed to really understand affiliate marketing, and the way a web site should be best structured to take advantage of good keyword design.

In fact, I found one! But it is so much more than any other site I found, particularly for people building a new internet business. This company certainly provides all the usual web hosting packages, web tools and so on, but they provide a complete internet business development framework and training as part of it. They cost no more than most major web hosting companies but provide to my mind at least many times more in real value to someone building their internet business or for someone who is just extending their offline business into the online world.

I could write pages and pages about how good I really do think the people at SBI are and I think they are so good I am setting up our online businesses with them. In fact, they have such a good package, I bought two! I can't say more than that, read all about them yourself, I doubt you will find anyone better to help you grow a real internet business and teach you as you go.

Here are some of their real life case studies SBI Case studies - this could be you too

And an overview video SBI Video Tour.

Or jump straight to the SBI homepage, sit back and watch a short video of how they can help you to build a solid profitable online business, they are helping me, I am sure they can help you too: SBI Video Introduction

World Internet Summit

Last weekend we had a fantastic two day Internet training seminar on the Gold Coast called the Warp Speed program run by Brett McFall. It really did far exceed my expectations. To be honest being a bit of a skeptic I thought it wouldn't cover much detail, but it really did - I learned so many useful things that I can apply right now to our business. There were some fantastic speakers who shared lots of their lessons learned. Lessons that have taken them years to pick up. I filled an entire spiral bound A4 pad with useful notes!

So those people who have previously asked me how to start building an internet business or even to improve their offline business with some great internet marketing techniques should try to come along. It is not expensive, and will give you 4 days training with different speakers. It is on the Gold Coast in mid March, 2009. It will cover a great range of topics including: how to build a second income with an internet business, SEO, affiliate marketing, AdSence, AdWords, Keywords, and even teach techniques to help your small offline business with Internet marketing.

If you can make it you really should take the opportunity. You would have to buy 50 books and read them cover to cover to get the same information that you can get in a short time for a small fraction of that price.

Check out the details here: World Internet Summit.

We are certainly going and I will be taking plenty of pads with me to keep notes.

Hope to see you there.

The top 500 sites on the web

Here is a trivial pusuit question for you: What are the top 10 web sites in the World?

What about the top 500? The answer is interesting, look at the list: Alexa: Top 500 Web Sites

Now that was just the apetizer, what about the top One Million Web sites in the World, yes - I am serious. Look at Top One Million Web Sites in the known Universe

If your site isn't one of them, don't worry - neither are any of my sites. Now guess how many web pages there are in the World! The answer today is at least 25.38 billion pages!

For full details on where that number came from check out World Wide Web Size.

I have just counted up the number of web pages I have produced and divided it by 25.38 billion to get my total contribution as a percentage. Hmmm - I had better get moving :-)

Where do I learn how to build an internet business?

A few people have asked where to find out how to build an internet business.

Well here is what I am doing myself
  1. Searching the Internet
  2. Reading lots of books - so check out your Book shops
  3. Learning from people who have already built successful online businesses by attending training forums. For example, the World Internet Summit in March, 2009 on the Gold Coast

There is so much information out there it is hard to sort the good information from the not so good and then to pick a business model that suits you.

My wife and I will be going to the WIS ourselves and am hoping to learn a great deal from some of the World's best.

Might see you there, good luck on your search

Just how many blogs are there?

How many blogs are out there is a good question? Even how many good small internet business blogs are there? I don't know yet, but I am starting to look around, but one thing is for sure - there are lots!

An interesting article I found states:
"Technorati currently states it is tracking over 112.8 million blogs, a number which obviously does not include all the 72.82 million Chinese blogs."

Check out the full article at this link:
BlogHerald: How many blogs are there?

Business Week has also looked into the Blog phenomena:
Business Week: Blogs will change your business

Technorati and others publish a catalog of blogs

BlogWell has compiled a great list of useful resources for small business on the net

Of course just doing a search in Google, Yahoo, Live or any search engine will give you a large list.

How does Twitter Work?

I have been using Twitter lately to try and find out what all the fuss is about. It certainly is an interesting micro-blogging tool and one I think could complement many businesses online. The trick is how best to use it?

Here is a survey I created to ask people what they think of Twitter. Please fill it in, it will take only 2 minutes.

http://tinyurl.com/b3hn6w

I will post the results once I have over 100.

In another post I will put in some of the best links to Twitter information I have found.

But just what is Twitter you ask? Watch this wonderful video from the Creative people at "Common Craft"

Now you are ready to use Twitter

Measuring the Search Rank of this Blog

Writing about SMART goals made me think how am I going to measure the success of this blog? What are the Specific goals of this blog after all? Why I am doing this? Well, this blog is partly a learning exercise for myself and my wife as we grow our online business. It is a way to collect our own thoughts as we proceed to build the business and to share ideas with a few others who are interested, some of whom are also building up their own internet presence. I don't expect it to make any money - it is to share ideas. Our money making websites aren't up and running yet but will be focused on specific products and services that are in work. The first of which I plan to be up and running and being refined during Q2, 2009. That is my stretch goal.

What about Measuring the success of this blog? Well Google does provide some excellent tools as part of the Blogger system so I will be using those once there is a lot more content in here. But for interest I just quickly did a search in Google with the key words: "small internet business blog" to see how far down the list, if at all, this blog would appear. I went through 50 pages of search results and didn't see it, and to be honest after only a few days and a few posts I didn't expect to see it, why should it appear anywhere yet? But let's see how it goes over the months and years ahead as we build our online business and keep our thoughts in this blog or whatever this evolves into.

Of course for a blog the real success is if someone finds the information useful.

Owen

Setting Business and Personal Goals

Back in corporate life on large projects we were always setting deadlines, putting together schedules and trying meet our commitments to our customers. There was lots of pressure, with very high costs involved. We had goals at each and every level of the organization but ultimately all were driven from the top level strategic business goals that over time were translated into more and more detail at each level of the company. We had many processes and tools and meetings to discuss our business plans and targets. Then once it was put together we then had to communicate that to all the team members and gain their buy-in, their commitment to achieving the laid down business plans. But that is another whole topic in itself, and a very important one, but let's get back to setting goals.

Just about everyone knows they have to set goals and a well known guideline is the SMART acronym, you may have heard of it. If you hunt around on the internet you will find some different variations on the SMART theme but here are my thoughts.

To achieve your goals they need to be SMART:

S is for Specific. You must state exactly what you want to achieve and the target date when you wish to achieve it. The how is another matter at the early stages of your goal. You may just want to get fit, or lose weight or run faster or make twice as much income next year. Well still write that down even though you may not know how you are going to do that. Just get the goal written down, and rewrite it every day if you need to until it is locked into your head. For your small internet business maybe your goal might be double your traffic in 3 months, or to double your web offerings in 3 months, or to double your click through rates. There are many things you could choose. More on that another time.

M is for Measurable. There is an old saying and a good one - "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it". Or in other words, and this is important, "Things that are measured get improved". So you must set goals that can be measured in some way, in a specific and objective way so that you can't fool yourself. If you fool yourself and don't use hard objective measures you are asking for trouble. It is a bit like driving a car on a long journey and ignoring the signposts along the way - you end up lost, and probably out of fuel! If you really want to achieve something you need to measure your progress along the way so you know if you are still traveling in the right direction, and also so you know when you get there. Measure each step, and each major achievement along the way to your goal. Like driving from one side of the country to the other. You measure off each town, city, state along the way until you get to your destination, your goal. Related to this is a whole topic of what to measure, because measuring the wrong thing can mean to focus your efforts in the wrong area, which will divert you from your goals. An example, is someone who tries to lose weight and just measures their weight but not their percentage fat and water content. Maybe, they lose some weight, but maybe they lose too much muscle mass as well which won't help them. Or driving on a long journey but only measuring the miles driven and not the cities you have gone through - sounds obvious and in that example it is, but in business it isn't always so obvious what measures you should choose. Think carefully about what you should measure, it is important.I will write more on this topic another time.

A is for Attainable or Achievable. No point setting a goal if you can never ever achieve it so you have to be realistic. But the trick here is the balance between realism and setting what some call "Big Hairy Audacious Goals" or "Thinking Big" or "Stretch Goals". There is something strange about the way our psychology works and I am not a psychologist, but if you set small, little, easily achievable goals all the time you won't be inspired by them, they won't set your gut on fire, they won't excite you and you may not even achieve them. Sure, to start your goal setting habits in the right direction you should set some small relatively easy goals to show you how the process works. But don't, just don't keep on setting goals that aren't big enough. How tall are you? How high can you reach? What if you stretch a little bit more? What if you stretched just a little bit more - now how high can you reach? I bet it is further than you thought you could. You get the idea - set goals that you can reach but only if you stretch to reach them. Set goals that are on the "top shelf" of life and business, not the easy to get ones on the bottom shelf.

R is for Relevant. We are all different, we are all motivated by different things and in different ways so set goals for yourself that mean something to you. They might not be so important to others but they need to be important and relevant and meaningful to YOU. If it doesn't motivate you, maybe you need to rethink it, rewrite it, reword it until it touches something in you, right inside you. Then take steps to achieve it, every day, every week, every month until you reach it.

T is for Time-Limited. We have all done it, we have all said I will get fit - wait for it - "one day" or "tomorrow" or "next week". I have a goal like that at the moment, I am going to repaint the deck "sometime". Yes, you guessed it, I am not highly motivated to paint my deck, I am more motivated in other directions. So when you set a goal you need to put a date on it, a time when you really will strive to achieve it by. And to make it a little bit easier you should work backwards from your main goal and list the steps or objectives that you need to achieve along the way to achieving your main goal. For example, first I need to do A - clean the deck, then I need to do B - repair the timber, then C - nail up the lose boards, and so on until you have listed all the steps, tasks, actions, or objectives you need to achieve in order to reach that "top shelf goal" you are setting for yourself and that you really do want to achieve. Once you have listed those steps, put a date on when you plan to achieve each and every one, and tick it off as you go. But don't worry about getting some of the dates wrong, you will get some wrong, just do the best you can, adapt as you go and work to towards your goal. This list of steps or tasks or objectives with dates, becomes your plan, your time based map to reach your destination. Use it and follow it and you will achieve your goals.

Well so much for SMART - it seems sensible doesn't it? What can be hard about that?

Well maybe you don't find it hard, but I personally find it hard, while others find it easy. For most people it is harder than it looks, we are each very different so what works for one may not work for the other. Most people and most businesses know they should set goals but many never do so, why? For me personally sometimes what happens is that I have set goals that don't really do it for me, they aren't really deeply relevant to me, they don't really enthuse me, so I don't achieve them because I am not passionate about them. But when something really is important to me, I am passionate about it, I am driven by it, and I achieve it, sometimes very quickly. Maybe you have had that experience as well. From my experience I know that the best chance I have of achieving anything is to follow the SMART guidelines and I am sure if you do, you will have a much better chance of success.

To be SMART about our new Internet Business I knew I had to set hard attainable relevant meaningful goals and drive myself to achieve them in just the same way I did when I was in corporate life. So everyday in the morning for a few weeks and whenever I get the chance I listen to advice from some of the masters in the field on what seems a simple topic: "How to set goals and achieve them". I listened and listened until it started to become ingrained, though to be honest it still isn't ingrained enough so I keep at it. Why - because I know it needs to become a powerful habit - I know our business will grow as a result. Setting goals will drive your business.

Once I really understood the power of setting goals in each aspect of my life, and I stopped worrying about exactly how I would achieve each goal at the outset, and that was hard, then I did sit down and write them out. Then each day I read them, sometimes I change them, but each day they are driving me forward. They are like fuel to my motivation engine and the provide direction for my work and almost everything I do. Try it - it will help you, and your business and even more if you give it a chance.

If you want to know which of the many Goal setting publications and authors I found most useful just reply to this blog with a question and I will post the names of the people in the hope that it helps you to.

Thanks for reading, now take some action, why don't you set some goals right now!

Let's get started

In this blog I am going to record what I have learned along the way as we build our first internet business. I hope others join in and share their ideas as well.

The biggest decision of course was to start a business in the first place and leave the comfort of the big corporate world - that is another story. Once that was done we had to work out the right business to be in, the right business structure and perhaps the hardest part of all - naming the business. In some ways finding a name for your brand new business is harder than naming your children. It is OK for your child to have the same name as the child next door - but it isn't OK for your business to have the same name as the one next door.

Of course we were way too ambitious and wanted to have a name that was unique on the internet! Oh boy! Well we quickly gave up on that idea and settled for one that was unique in the area we are based and with few similar names out in the internet space. And then back in early January we incorporated our business and got started.

The story will continue
